Recorded in Berlin and spaced out between 2020 and 2021, the band presents its 19th full-length studio album. Fire Doesn't Grow On Trees is the beginning of an exciting new phase for Newcombe and his band. Working with him in the studio and via video/mail on this album were Ricky Maymi (guitar), Ryan Carlson Van Kriedt (keyboards), Hakon Adalsteinsson (guitar), Hallberg Dadi Hallbergsson (bass) and Uri Rennert (drums). The band is on a 34-date North American tour with Mercury Rev this spring, with festival appearances at Levitation in Angers, France in June, Elevation in Graz, Austria in July and NOX ORAE in Switzerland in August, with European touring scheduled for September 2022 plus another in February 2023. Newcombe was originally heavily influenced by the Rolling Stones' psychedelic phase - the name comes from Stones guitarist Brian Jones in association with a reference to cult leader Jim Jones - but in the 2000s his work has expanded into aesthetic dimensions that approach the British shoegazing genre of the 1990s and incorporate influences from world music, particularly the Middle East and Brazil. "The Real" is the first forerunner of the album.
